0034 Banka Banka to Mataranka 24th July

Wind, wind, dust, wind, dust, wind.  HORRIBLE morning, with very strong winds blowing dust everywhere, making breakfast gritty, and packing up very difficult.  We eventually got it done, and hit the road north to Mataranka Hot Springs.

Apart from some big rock outcrop that suddenly appeared, this was REALLY boring road !!  So boring in fact we decided to keep going all morning without a stop o we could reach what we had been told was a good pub in Daly Waters for lunch.  We got there about 1.30 pm, and like so many other things we have seen on this trip, in the middle of NOWHERE is this amazing pub in a tiny town, absolutely packed with bus loads of tourists and campers, and serving great cold beer and delicious food !!   it is a totally off-beat place,  with walls covered with money, hats, underwear, T shirts, and everything else you can think of !!  Apparently it really jumps at night too, as there is a big campsite next door and they bring in bands !!  Barramundi Burgers ?  Yum.  This is Barra’ country up here, and they know how to cook it !!

Then it was another 3 hours up the boring road (no photos of the road, so you KNOW it was boring !!) and we arrived at Elsey Natonal Park (awww!!) and Mataranka Hot Springs.  Once again, something amazing in the middle of no where.  The hot springs are popular year round, and in the evening there was a guy playing music from the 60’s and 70’s, and he was pretty good !  There were little Wallabies wandering around everywhere, and even a peacock strutting his stuff (memories of my school in England where we had peacocks that used to wake us up every morning !!)  So we had a couple of beers there in the bar before turning in at the end of a long day.
